NATIONAL ARCHITECTURE / COMPONENT 02 OF 05

Developmental Evidence Base

Six interconnected, non-hierarchical domains bring established developmental thinking into a shared explanation of adolescence, while preserving the distinct contributions of different fields.

01 / PURPOSE

The question this component asks

What helps us understand adolescence across different disciplines?

Six domains, one connected developmental landscape.

ⓘ No single discipline, theory or professional viewpoint fully explains the lived experience of adolescence..

The domains work together. Select each to discover the particular questions it helps connect.

DOMAIN 01 / DEVELOPMENT & IDENTITY

How do young people come to understand who they are?

Development and identity are shaped through the interaction of internal change, relationships, lived experience and the environments surrounding young people.

WHAT THIS DOMAIN EXAMINES

The formation of identity, agency, motivation, belonging and self-understanding throughout adolescence.

WHY IT MATTERS

It helps explain why young people's responses cannot be understood through behaviour alone. Their sense of self develops in relationship with the people, institutions and opportunities around them.

CONNECTED IDEAS
Identity formation Agency Motivation Belonging
Understanding identity requires attention to both the young person and the conditions shaping their experience.

Six domains. One shared developmental understanding. The domains are interdependent, not separate explanations of adolescence. Different disciplines contribute to understanding the same lived developmental landscape.

03 / INTERDEPENDENCE

Different perspectives, one lived experience.

Select an illustrative situation to reveal why no one domain is sufficient.

SITUATION 01 / INTERDISCIPLINARY UNDERSTANDING

School exclusion & reintegration

A young person returns to learning after exclusion, but their engagement remains uncertain.

FOUR CONNECTED EVIDENCE DOMAINS

Select a situation to explore different dimensions of the same experience.

04 / 06 DOMAINS EXPLORED
WHY SHARED UNDERSTANDING MATTERS

These examples illustrate possible dimensions of understanding, not conclusions about any individual young person. All six evidence domains remain relevant to the wider developmental picture.
