INSIGHT-TO-INFLUENCE / OVERVIEW

Listening is a start. Influence is the responsibility.

A framework and connected learning offer helping young people understand how they can influence decisions, and organisations demonstrate what happens after they listen.

THE CENTRAL QUESTION

What happens after young people speak?

Participation is not complete just because a meeting happened, a survey closed or a report was published.

AFTER PARTICIPATION 01 / 04 UNDERSTANDING

Understand the insight

Young people's perspectives deserve careful interpretation, not selective quotations.

WHY THIS MATTERS

WHAT SHOULD HAPPEN

    WHEN THE JOURNEY BREAKS DOWN

    01 / 04
    AN IMPORTANT DISTINCTION

Action, influence and impact are connected. They are not interchangeable.

A responsible account of what happened should be clear about what an organisation did, what young people's insight shaped and what difference can actually be evidenced.

    01

    Action

What the organisation did in response: a decision, review, change, escalation or other recorded step.

    02

    Influence

How young people's insight helped shape the organisation's understanding, consideration, decisions or actions.

    03

    Impact

The resulting difference for people, services, practice or systems, where there is sufficient evidence to describe it.

An action is not automatically evidence of youth influence, and influence is not automatically evidence of wider impact. Organisations should make claims only to the extent their records and evidence support them.

    THE CENTRAL RESPONSIBILITY

The responsibility to respond does not belong solely to the people who invited young people into the room.

It continues through the professionals, organisations and decision-makers who interpret, receive, consider and act upon their insight. Young people should be able to understand that journey, including what changed, what did not and why.
