Ethical & Rights Basis

of Youth Development

The cross-cutting ethic–rights spine. Natural Equity and the UNCRC provide complementary ethical and rights-based reference points for interpreting all NAYD components.

01 / PURPOSE

The question this component asks

Why must youth development be grounded in dignity, fairness and rights?

Natural Equity asks whether developmental fairness is genuinely experienced, not simply promised through identical offers.

ⓘ The UNCRC supplies a recognised children’s rights basis for thinking about protection, participation, development and dignity.

02 / EXPLORE NATURAL EQUITY AND THE UNCRC

Two complementary foundations.

Select either part of the ethic–rights spine to understand its distinct contribution.

NATURAL EQUITY

Developmental fairness is not always identical treatment.

Natural Equity recognises that young people encounter different circumstances, opportunities, relationships and barriers as they develop.

WHAT IT CONTRIBUTES

It provides the ethical basis for examining whether developmental conditions are genuinely accessible and responsive to different lived circumstances, rather than merely being offered on identical terms.

WHY IT MATTERS WITHIN NAYD

Natural Equity shapes how NAYD understands fairness across the entire architecture, informing how evidence, developmental conditions, Turning Points and professional frameworks are interpreted.

Two complementary foundations. One ethic–rights spine. Natural Equity informs how developmental fairness is understood; the UNCRC provides the recognised rights-based reference point. Together, they shape the interpretation of NAYD.

COMPONENT 02 / DEVELOPMENTAL EVIDENCE BASE

Evidence interpreted through dignity and fairness.

The Ethical & Rights Basis shapes how developmental evidence is understood and used across professional disciplines.

NATURAL EQUITY CONTRIBUTES

Attention to differences in young people's lived circumstances, including how environments and opportunities affect their developmental experience.

THE UNCRC CONTRIBUTES

A rights-based reference point for interpreting evidence without losing sight of dignity, non-discrimination, participation and development.

Evidence helps explain development; the ERB shapes how that knowledge should be interpreted responsibly.
