Levels of Change

Young people grow up in places, not organisational boundaries.

A young person's experience of adolescence can be shaped by their school, neighbourhood, family, health services, youth provision, social care, housing, transport, community spaces and countless everyday relationships. Those parts of the youth-facing landscape may be governed, funded and delivered separately.

Young people experience their interaction.

Place-Based Change asks what becomes possible when the organisations, professionals and young people shaping adolescence within a place develop a stronger understanding of their shared landscape and their responsibilities within it.

Why Place Matters

Every place has its own youth-facing landscape.

The organisations within it, relationships between them, opportunities available to young people, pressures facing services and experiences of adolescence will never be identical from one community to another.

That means strengthening youth development cannot simply involve designing a model nationally and reproducing it everywhere.

Place provides the context in which different parts of the youth-facing landscape can understand how they interact, identify where connections need strengthening and develop responses grounded in the realities of their own communities.

The aim is not to make every place look the same.

It is to strengthen each place's capacity to understand and support youth development together.

Multi-Agency Youth Development Partnerships

A shared infrastructure for youth development within a place.

The Multi-Agency Youth Development Partnership (MYDP) is YOUTHOOD's long-term model for Place-Based Change.

It brings organisations, professionals and young people from across a local youth-facing landscape into a shared partnership focused on strengthening how adolescence and youth development are understood, connected and supported across the place.

Rather than creating another service or replacing existing partnerships, the MYDP creates developmental infrastructure around what is already there: shared learning, stronger connections, structured youth insight and opportunities to understand the landscape across organisational and professional boundaries.

The partnership runs over an initial two-year period, giving places time to move beyond one-off conversations and develop a sustained approach to learning and change.

What Happens Through an MYDP?

An MYDP creates several connected spaces through which a place can learn about itself.
